Number of persons granted Citizenship in the
United States each year from 1990 to 2012
Every year, many persons who have been granted legal permanent residence in the United States apply to become citizens through the process of naturalization. Generally speaking, a legal resident can apply for citizenship after five years if he or she meets some additional requirements such as being physically present in the United States for a specified period of time, being of good moral character as that is defined by the law and the many cases that interpret the law, being able to read, write and speak English, having a basic knowledge of United States history, and having a basic knowledge of the form of government in the United States.

Below are the number of legal permanent residents in the United States that were granted citizenship, or in other words, the number of new citizens through naturalization, each year from 1996 to 2012, according to the immigration and citizenship statistics from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
